Why don't you rent this DVD entitled "City of God" from a video rental store and it'll show you what happened in a favela of Rio called "Cidade de Deus" ("City of God") back in the 1960s and 1970s. The DVD ALSO has extras such as showing what is STILL happening in Brazilian favelas today. Go ahead and check it out!
