police scanner will not scan or pick up frequencies?

my scanner has been unpluged for about year the other day i pluged it up to see if it still worked and all i could hear was static it would not scan or pick up any frequencies any help would be nice

Chances are, the local departments you're scanning for have either switched frequencies around on you or have gone to digital. Something scanners won't pick up.

Additionally to the previous post, some scanners when left without charging will lose memory, so ontop of upgrading to digital, it could also be that your frequency banks are lost,
