Lately when my cat is getting ready to sleep or be petted near me she starts to kneed me. She never use to do this but lately she has, is there a reason?

This is a sign of affection. Also when the cat was a kitten before going to sleep cats usually kneed their mother's fur, as a sense of security and try to make themselves comfortable. If she kneads you then that means she feels secure in your presence and agrees to let you act as her mother. This shows a deep trust between the cat and you.

Cats knead soft things in any effort to recapture those kitten feelings of well-being, safety and security when they were kitten nursing at their momma's belly. It has a claming effect on them and ges them ready to sleep. Usually they will knead a pillow, a soft bed cover, your lap or even your belly! As they mature, the kneading gradually stops.

It is a compliment for you sweet pea. She loves you as her "mommy".
Also when cats are little they "kneed" their mama's teats to start the milk flowing for their meal. The "kneeding" is a comfort thing for them as well as a way they used to get food as wee ones.
Food=Comfort

She is giving you affection. She totally trust you. This reflects back to when she was a kitten and she would knead her mother when getting milk. I have a friend that calls it making biscuits.
