Here is a picture of it. It has a wooden handle and the lid is hinged. What is it used for specifically?

I think it is made of stainless steel. I think it is used for cooking but for what? The pan is 6 inches in diameter.

I saw something like it on BBC America on Cash in the Attic. Check the bottom of the pan for hallmarks. If it is silver or even silver-plate there will be some kind of markings there. It really looks like a crumb tray that was used to clean off tables in more established homes. The lid would be flipped back with a thumb.

Bed warmers were more often than not made out of cast iron and there were vents cut into the tops to allow the heat to escape.

A popcorn popper would be deeper and a lot of the old ones had a handle on top so you could stir the popcorn to ensure that all the kernels would pop.

As for it being an omelet pan, I really don't think so. My grandmother had one back in the 50's. Hers looked like a pan that had been cut in half and then hinged the length of the pans. She used it to cook more than one thing at a time to keep them separate. I don't ever remember her making omelets though.

KTJ and Spyderbear are definitely right that pan is for emptying ashtrays and brushing crumbs into. If it were a bed warmer or a popcorn popper it would have a much longer handle on it!

It looks like either an old fashioned bed warmer (they used to put hot coals in it then place it under the mattress). Or maybe an omelet pan.

It looks like one of those pans they used to warm your bed with back in the days.

It's used for either popping popcorn or either as a bed warmer. I'm really leaning towards popcorn.

My husband and I just looked at it. We have no clue. The closest thing we can think of is an omelet pan or egg poacher.

It looks like a griddle pan that is used for making omelets or anything that you can fold or flip

I believe KTJ is right. It was called a butler's helper or butler's friend and used to collect all the crumbs and other mess that the butler swept off the table.

You don't say how big it is or what it is made of but it could be for catching crumbs as the are brushed off of a table or for emptying ashtrays into.
