ask him.. the worst he can do is say no.. you will then know if he's worth thinking about.. if you know whether or not you have a chance, you will be able to move on with or without him.

just ask.either you dont ask and never know or ask and risk him saying no.but if he says yes it is much better than not knowing at all.
