well you just get to know them and talk about their personality and stuff. just talk to them about their feelings and your feeling for them. but if ur friend is there then u will have to just talk about things all together. play truth or dare (spin the bottle)
play a game and thats how you would usually get their attention

Find out what the guy is interested in. His hobbies - sports - cars - just whatever and learn about it if you can. Ask him if he has any brothers or sisters, or talk about your family, and interests too.
