on the dule carrage way today a dog ran across and got hit at around 60-70mph, we pulled over and carried the dog to the side of the road (the driver who hit the dog drove off). The dog was still consious and had its lung half out its chest. i managed to calm it enough to lay on its side and the lung wen back in. we called the police but they didnt come untill it had died (20mins or so). for that time the dog was struggling to breath and i assume had a puntured lung where blood was welling (i think). looking back at it i should have rolled it onto its other side so the blood drained. what else should have i done to make it more comfertable and help it? (i also put a blanket on it to keep it warmer). i no it dosnt help now but i would like to know what i should have done. thanks

This was a sad and traumatic situation for you, your compassion shows that you did stop and help, which is more than the driver did. Under the circumstances, the dog was probably in shock and did not suffer too long, there is really little you could have done. The best thing you did was stop and try to help, sometimes it is not enough, but at least you did something. Thank you and I know that the dog is in a better place. Bless you.

I would assume the damage was already done when the dog was hit. There is not much you can do for an animal with internal bleeding, and I would say there was more damage than just the lung....shock alone can be a killer.
By just being there for the animal in its time of crisis would have been very comforting and reassuring for the dog, and you are to be highly commended for this act. What a nice caring person you are...unlike the one that drove off.
You did the best you could under the circumstances, and your proof is that the dog was calm...WELL DONE!!

You are a good person, and it is hard to see death happen, especially when it is as gruesome as this. Please understand that there is nothing anyone could have done for a dog hit at that speed. Also, it more than likely went into severe shock (as we are programmed to do in great trauma) and would have had almost no consious awareness of what happened. To be blunt, the poor thing would never have known what happened, and it would not have been aware really. There is nothing you can do with massive trauma, except try and comfort them, which it sounds like you did. Please don't feel any guilt, it was not your fault.
You are probably a bit in shock yourself, it's awful to see an animal in such pain because they are so helpless. Talk is over with your girlfriend as much as you need to, have a little sob in the shower if you need to, I work in a hospital. Death is not something we experience in our culture very often, and rarely in front of us, it is brutal and shocking and I think alot of people under estimate how much so.

I think that you did a fabulous job of caring for that poor dog. I hope that you never have to deal with a situation again. If I were you, I would just talk to him peacefully and let him know that he is loved. It may also be a good idea to shoot it in the head to stop the pain. I know I couldn't live with myself if I did that, but I wouldn't want it in pain. Next time, I guess you could call the police and ask them for the animal hospital number or something since the police are too considered about the donuts! thanks again for helping the dog. God bless.

Calling a vet was a good idea, but there's low posibilities that the vet could arrive on-time...

Acompany the poor dog until his/her last breath wich You've done it...

I'm complimenting You for your act... Most people wil only left any dying animal that they hit...

Why dog are called "Men's best friend"? (and women to ofcourse), Dog don't ask anything from their master but their Love, even if you never feed your dog, he/she will never ran away as long as You give Love to them... And you've just showed how big is your Love to a dog that you never met before...

Hope this ease You
Bless You my friend

Most people would have just kep going.

You are obviously something special. You did as much as any person could have done.

Forget about the "should I have...." You did your best. When he got to Doggie Heaven, I hope he put in a good word for you.

please dont think about this. you obviously care a lot for animals and you have a very big heart. do not beat yourself up over this. dont think about what you could have done or should have done. you were in a tough situation and its hard to think clearly.

but to answer your question, i guess you could have jumped in your car and taken it to the closest emergency vet. but that would probably still not be able to save it if its lung was out of his chest. and they would have cost you money too. just a thought. but please dont think about it. its sad and theres nothing you can do now. you did your best.

The best thing would have been to call vets. But now, publishing the story is a good thing, and the policemen responsible for ignoring your call, should face charges of negligence.

You did everything you could damage like that is deadly and really there was nothing much you could do but try and not let it suffer as it passed away and you did that, dont feel bad thinking that you could have done more because you really did all you could

Dogs are social domestic creatures.Being with it to the end was the best! Most dogs systems block pain better than ours. the comfort of your company was huge.
