if your situation is similar to mine (no one wants to pick up anything - the kids, the husband, the brother and it is a health hazard and a pigsty) you can try what worked for me. I sat everyone down and announced that this was the last time I was cleaning up this whole house with no help and from now on, if anything was left out - what ever was left out would be found in the middle of your bed the first time, next time- it goes in the trash since you dont care enough about it to take care of it. That applied to everything - clothes, toys, computer parts, dvds, shoes, dishes - EVERYTHING. Dont have sympathy - they will throw a fit the first time you throw something away that they wanted, but once they figure out you are serious, they WILL pick up their stuff - or its gone (dont get me wrong- you make it age appropriate - i just hide my 7 yr olds clothes and then make her pay with her allowence to get them back - my brother and my husband on the otherhand, i just throw the stuff away)

Move out, then they have no option but to clean up after themselves.

You just have to stay on top of them. If there was ever another way, I never found it. I did train them rather well however and today my two career minded daughters are neat as can be in every aspect of their lives. Three sons are into their careers as well and happy with their wives, so I won't go there.~Jill

every evening, i go through the house and throw away everything that is left out. clothes i hide (they still haven't figured that one out - my step son is down to one pair of socks and two pairs of underwear!), but everything else is thrown in the trash. it's starting to work - getting a favorite toy (for children or adults) thrown away is a good deterrant, but it takes time.

another hint - if they continually leave the lights on, take the light bulbs out!!!
