I am VERY interested in this career. I'm aware they do not get paid as much as hygienists.

If you think you can go higher than assistant then GO FOR IT!!!
I think that hygienists are better seen as assistants and of course well payed. So try to go as high as you can in your life...don't let anything stop you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course,only if that is your wish...if you like beeing assistant than follow your dream...everything it's up to you...!!!!the choice is in your hands!!!

Honestly, I really didn't like dental assisting. I felt like the pay was not nearly enough for the amount of work I did. I'm in school right now for dental hygiene and I like it so much better. Some people really enjoy dental assisting though, and you may be one of those people. If you're interested, go for it!
