An open pimple is any one that has an opening and is set to drain, or has had the skin covering it knocked, rubbed, or taken off in some way. It can also be the way someone describes a blackhead, since that is dried sebum in a pore that is actually open to the air.

As for the folk remedy, it's egg white, but it doesn't actually work. It just feels like it "tightens" the skin because of the way it dries. The same thing would happen if you slathered mucus on your skin and let that dry (sorry, I know that sounds gross). The best homemade mask for pimples is actually an aspirin mask. (You can google for backup on that if you haven't heard of it). People crush aspirin or the alka-seltzer-type aspirin tablets into a solution of water and/or witch hazel. This actually works on acne because of the anti-inflammatory properties of aspirin, and because salicylic acid (aspirin is a salicylate) is what is found in many acne medications.

Many acne sufferers (of which I am one, but I've read what lots of others have to say) suggest using jojoba oil also. If you remove the oils from your skin in acne treatments, which often happens as it is helpful, you have to replace it or that oil will just rebound right back. Jojoba oil is chemically the closest to sebum without a lot of the problems your natural sebum can create. Many people find it softens their skin in a way that prevents blackheads because of this.

Both I think, but egg whites are more commonly used in face masks. Face masks help to close or 'shrink' the pores
