From the latin insanus, the last bit being anus..??

Is it because when I was a kid I used to try to crack walnuts at my grandads and bits of walnut shrapnell would wing him in the eye causing him to miss Dickie Davis and the football pools results. This would indeed drive him mental.. and result in an *** whupping of epidemic proportions via his big shovel like hands (he was a big man my grandad)...

It could come from the Latin word insanus. The end of the word being nus, the t could have just been added at some point. Only a guess though!

If a person's insane, they are considered
nuts. However, if they've gone bonkers,
then they are only temporarily insane.
Unless, they are missing some banana's.
In which case, they are now a few clowns
short of a circus.
