I am considering buying a Cairn Terrier from a breeder in Oregon who has been showing her line of dogs for 20+ yrs. Does anyone have experience with these dogs? I have been told they are good family dogs and we have a 4 yr old daughter. We have a VERY small yard so a big dog is not an option. Someone recently said, "why would you want that dog their hair is so wirery - yuck!" Any feedback is appreciated! I have ruled out the mini schnauzer, west highland terrier and a couple others...(I am a terrier lover) but I am close to purchasing this one.

I owned a Cairn for nine years (stomach cancer) he was the best. The only problem was he did not get along well with cats. He got along very well with the kids until he got sick. Mine looked just like Toto except he was a little bigger. He was very protective. He got along well with other dogs as long as they were submissive. I don't think you would have any problems if it were brought in as a puppy with other animals. I hope you get one, I really miss mine. They are great dogs. They have no fear whatsoever. Best of luck.

Obviously each dog is different... but our Cairn was a mean nasty little thing. It had obviously been abused, though....

However, our West Highland Terrier is the greatest dog ever! Hardly barks, was easy to house train, rarely gets into things, and is sweet and gentle and just all around adorable.

I wonder why you ruled out Westies? If you get one from a reputable breeder, you shouldn't have any of the normal health problems associated with them (my Westie is adopted, rescued from a BAD breeder and she does have skin problems)

My guess though, the breeder you chose sounds excellent, so you should be fine. She will tell you if it's the right dog for you or not. Good breeders don't just want to make money, they want to make sure their pups go to excellent homes. You could ask her for referals from people who have bought puppies from her, too.

Good luck!

one more note - Cairn's fur requires a good amount of grooming, he will probably need weekly brushings and a trip to the groomers every 3-4 months.

If you like terriers Cairns are very nice and they aren't over bred, plus it sounds like you have found a good breeder. Go for it! Congratulations!

We grew up with one. He was a wacky little guy and never ceased to make us laugh. They are great dogs, but tend to be yappy.
