Is this a necessity? Certainly not! How can adding a ninth ray foster national unity? If symbols are what we need, there could have been a lot of them that passed us before. The Philippines needs more than a symbol to be united. What this country needs is a change of values and morals both in its leaders and its people. Besides, those who are pushing on with this idea miss the point on why those rays are there in the first place. Those eight provinces that the rays represent were bound by a SINGLE IDEAL, organized by the Katipunan to achieve a COMMON GOAL. What is the goal? To achieve Independence from Spain through a Revolution AND to build a nation, a republic in fact, with sovereignty. The republic was actually named "Republika ng Katagalugan" although according to the Katipunan manifesto, "Katagalugan" covers the entire archipelago from Luzon to Mindanao. So what is the point? Adding a ray representing the Muslims will be out of place! They were not SHARING the goal that the other eight provinces fought for. This does not mean, however, that I do not recognize the contributions of our Muslim brothers in the fight for independence. If we really want to honor the people of Mindanao who showed courage during the wars that passed, what we should PUSH FOR is PEACE and RECONCILIATION in the island. The elections is coming, it is for us to decide whether we really want genuine change in the system or just go on living under the current circumstances.
