Are there financial aid programs available for college programs beyond a baccalaureate degree? I though you could still get grants beyond a 4 year degree.

When it comes to federal aid beyond a bachelors degree, unfortunately there isn't. You are only qualified for federal student loans being either a subsequent degree or masters degree and beyond. Now there may be private grants and scholarships that are available, don't forget about them. Look into a sponsor or go to www.fastweb.com and see what you can find. There are a lot of private grants out there for either your major or if you work for a larger company.

I would have to agree that there isn't much in the way of federal aid for graduate students. You may be eligible for Stafford Loans or the new Graduate PLUS Loan (same loan program your parents may have taken out for you during your undergrad, now available to you as the borrower) or Federal Work-Study funds. As far as gift aid (aka free money!) you will want to check with your academic department about scholarships, fellowships, and research and teaching assistantships. You'll have to work for some of that money by assisting professors with research or teaching, but the hours may be better than what you would get from an off-campus job.

Another good source of income as a graduate student would be your full-time employer. If you are planning to major in something that would make you more valuable to your company, many will pay for all or part of your tuition. This may mean you'll only be able to attend part-time, but if it means you won't be drowning in debt, it might be well worth the wait for that MA.
