...when it gets to the "Installing Windows" section, error messages appears stating that it can not copy a .dl_ file and asking me to browse for the gile, retry or cancel.

When I click on browse, the window opens up to the file that it says it can't copy. The file is just sitting there on the disc, but why can't it copy.

When I click on cancel to just continue without installing the file, the same error message appears for about 60 other files...what gives? Why is Windows XP so complicated?

Am I doing something wrong?

sounds like your disk might be corrupted :( is it scratched? might not hurt to gently clean it with rubbing alcohol or a kit, serious scratches require a disk doctor...

If that many files show errors and the CD was OK before, I suspect that some of your memory developed errors.
I have had that happen for that same reason.
If you have more than one memory strip, take first one out, then try the install again. If you still get errors, try it with the other strip.
I have a program that allows me to check memory. If you like I can send you the names of the 2 programs I have and you can download them (free) and use them.

Same thing happened to me when I installed it from the disc a year ago. I didn't know what else to do, so I just kept going. Whatever those files are, I don't seem to miss them. My system works just fine! I'd be interested in knowing what those error messages mean, too. What I don't have, I don't miss I guess.

Your disc is scratched. You have two options:

1. Try cleaning the disc and reinstalling. If that doesn't work...

2. Contact your computer manufacturer and explain to them that the disc is giving you read errors. They will send you out a new copy of the disc, more than likely, for a nominal fee. Last time I did this it was $5.00.

my wife has had to redo our computer several times and she always has to delete partitions first. They are in the boot up menu. Try that and see what happens.
