I know that its gross but all dogs do it because there is a scent gland near the butt area which tells the dog about the other dog, like if its female or male.

Don't tape your dog's nose. That could hurt your dog and it is NOT a smart thing to do.

Dog's are like that. There's glands in every dog's butt that's like an ID card to other dogs. That's how the recognize them and figure out other numerous bits of info.

Actually you shouldn't prevent it unless its a female dog in heat. Dogs do that to tell the sex and where the other dog comes from and its a good thing they do that or else they might just fight if you don't let them. But if its a female dog in heat then keep them away.

You need to demonstrate to him proper dog etiquette.

First, sniff his butt. Let your nose actually touch his butt. He won't like this.

Next, let him sniff your butt. When his nose touches your butt, expel flatulence on him. He will not like this. For your dog to really get the message,it's a good idea for you to eat something hot and spicy before expeling flatulence on him.

As your dog sniffs your butt, repeat in a low, firm voice, "No. No."

Repeat as necessary. If usually takes many tries to teach this. It's also a good idea for you to get your friends to take part in this, so that your dog will know that all people, and not just you, don't appreciate canine butt sniffing.

This is the first positive step torward teaching your dog new habits.

Good Luck!

Sniffing is like reading a newspaper to a dog. They can tell who they've been around, what they ate, etc. Remember their sense of smell is hundreds of times more than ours.

You can't. That's how dog's find out what sex the other dog is and what they have been eating and if they are healthy. its a natural thing that you won't be able to break unless you put your dog in a cage.

This is natural for dogs to do. Your dog should not be running loose though to do it, and if he is on a leash it is UP TO YOU to teach him not to do that on lead. Enroll in some obedience classes so that you and your dog can learn about it.

He's a dog! That's what dogs do. They can't very well go up to each other and shake hands.

I agree its gross. But you can't stop it. All animals do this. Its there nature and it is normal for them to do it. And it CAN'T be stopped, the answers on how to stop it are probably from people that don't know anything about animals.
