Hi, I have a 1998 Escort td. I want to program a remote fob to the car. The handbook says the remote is an infa red type, but i thought this was only on the early models? Does anyone know if it is infa red or not? Also the programming instructions seem vage and seem like a heap of rubbish. Does anyone know how to programe a key? Thanks 4 looking and taking time out!

Nothing vague about the instructions in this (page 43) owners manual.
Here's the link to download (in PDF format) the complete owners manual for a 1998 Ford Escort:

Do you have an actual Ford remote? There are several different remotes, you have to have the correct one (flip it over to see the part #). Or did you buy one, aftermarket, generic ?
