I was wondering if it is a high dose for a woman who is 23 yrs old and 113 lbs? I have to take it two times a day (this is the second time I had strep throat in 3 weeks?!) Should this medication work cause my other one didn't (Omnicef). :( I just don't want to get a reaction if it is a high dose...if anyone can help me, that would be GREAT!!

"Dosage - Adults: The usual adult dose is one 500-mg tablet of AUGMENTIN every 12 hours or one 250-mg tablet of AUGMENTIN every 8 hours. For more severe infections and infections of the respiratory tract, the dose should be one 875-mg tablet of AUGMENTIN every 12 hours or one 500-mg tablet of AUGMENTIN every 8 hours."

That is the highest adult dosage, and was probably prescribed to ensure that all the bacteria are killed. Make sure you take it all as prescribed. Some people have digestive problems so take it with food (it should mention that on the bottle). Yeast infections may also occur, so report any complications to your doctor promptly.

Also, if you are on the pill, be aware that antibiotics often reduce the effectiveness of oral birth control, so use alternative birth control (e.g. condoms) throughout the course of the treatment and for at least a week afterwards.

Your question about the dose of augmentin is well founded and I shall here describe the tablet and it’s dosage. Augmentin is a tablet containing two components and taken by mouth (orally). The two components are a semisynthetic formulation of the antibiotic amoxicillin – which is an analog of ampicillin derived from the basic penicillin nucleus ‘6-aminopenicillanic acid’; and the beta-lactamase inhibitor claculanate potassium which is the potassium salt of clavulanic acid. Penicillins and beta-lactamase inhibitors are used to treat infections caused by bacteria. They work by killing the bacteria or preventing their growth. The beta-lactamase inhibitor is added to the penicillin to protect the penicillin from certain substances (enzymes) that will destroy the penicillin before it can kill the bacteria. The usual adult dose is one 500-mg tablet of augmentin every 12 hours or one 250-mg tablet of augmentin every 8 hours. For more severe infections and infections of the respiratory tract, the dose should be one 875-mg tablet of augmentin every 12 hours or one 500-mg tablet of augmentin every 8 hours. Your dose is, therefore, not excessive, and I trust that this information will set your mind at rest and prevent any further concern. It would seem that your doctor is prescribing a dose that should be effective.
Hope this helps

That is not a very high dose. Of course it can cause some side effects, so read what the pharmacy gave you and if you get any concerning effects go to your doctor.

However it sounds like you might need to boost your immune system -- if you're not already eating healthy you might want to clean out your diet and especially boost your vitamin C and B intake. Also during and after the antibiotics you will really want to take some probiotics such as acidophilus (get a form that needs to be refrigerated, it's more potent). Augmentin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and it will kill the good bacteria in your gut.

Are you self-medicating? Omnicef is a cephalosporin and it should be stronger than the Augmentin. Just wondering why you went down to a weaker antibiotic.

I've used Augmentin before and that's a standard dose. It's a very powerful antibiotic and it works! Good luck and I hope you feel better.

As a healthcare provider I can tell you tha the dose is appropriate for the situation. The important issue her is to eradicate the strep. Your healthcare provider has switched antibiotic classifications...which is the medical standard of care. It's important to take this medication as directed. I would advise taking it every 12 hours to maintain a steady amount of medication in your system.

Eat yogurt or take a probiotic to get the healthy bacteria back in there. I think my naturopath said it's best to take probiotic/yogurt/good bacteria inbetween your antibiotic doses, so you are not wasting your good bacteria.
