i have a jack russell terrier and hes great. i trained him by taking him to PetSmart and going to the training sessions and it really helped. if you want to teach him to sit get a treat and put it over and behind his head so he sits. you learn a lot more at the sessions. JACK RUSSELL RULE!!!!!!!!!

Do NOT use the "alpha roll" on him. This is a technique where you take the dog and flip it onto its back. It is used supposedly to establish dominance, but it very often backfires and makes the dog not trust you and become defensive and snappy.

The best way to make your dog respect you as a leader is through obedience training, making him perform a certain command before getting something he wants (e.g., make him sit before letting him outside, or giving him his food), and setting limits. Don't let your dog on the furniture if he has a tendency to be bossy over you. Get a crate for him so that he has a designated sleeping area.

Read the article "12 General Rules for Training Dogs" in my source list. On that same website, you'll also find how to teach your dog the basic commands.

small dogs are harder to train but there are alot of books on how to train them at the library.

if all fails, take him/her to doggie daycare

potty training is easy just take it to a designated potty place (inside or outside, that is easy to access) every hour or so.

Make sure the dog KNOWS you're dominant to it. Get down on the floor and roll him over on his back, growling. Make sure he know it's not a game and that this is serious stuff. JRTs are hard to train because they're smart and they like to think they're in charge. Also, invest in obedience classes when they're young. It makes everything so much easier.
