What sort of music? If it is classical or pop, you need talent, training and lots of practice. If it is Cajun, scream and sing fast. If it is country, just sing through your nose like Willie Nelson. If it is rock, punk, rap etc. you mainly need marketing.

I am currently a lead in a musical, and one of my favorite warm ups is one where you say: "1 2 1, 1 2 3 2 1, 1 2 3 4 3 2 1, etc, until you reach 8. Every number has a note. 1 is middle C (if you have a piano, it helps tremendously!) and 2 is a step above it. 3 is a step higher, and so on. So, if you were singing "1 2 3 4 5 4 3 2 1", you would be singing the notes C D E F G F E D C. I hope that makes sense to you! Good luck in your future!

I'd suggest some lessons - even a modestly-priced tutor would be fine to begin with, as each individual has different needs and such. Even if you don't continue them, the first few lessons can give you a base to go on from, and you'll learn at least the basics of warming up to suit your own voice.

Talent agencies are never a good idea until you're ready, if you get too many knock-backs it could affect your confidence, I'd personally work at it with a tutor first and see how it progresses.

Tim Seelig, "The Perfect Blend" book and DVD will change your life. I use it with all my students.

If you get classical training , you will be prepared to do ANY kind of singing.

Don't limit yourself to one type of singing, explore jazz, pop, musicals, classical, commercials, country. Do it well, in a healthy manner. Singers that are flexible can go far. Singers that box themselves in are limiting their chances.

Get REAL feedback, not from loved ones. You may or may not have the chops, it needs to be addressed.

Lessons, training, practice, practice, practice, some talent, and a whole bunch of dedication. You need to eat, sleep and dream it.
Good luck.
