And then towards the middle of the day...it gets darker and less even toned? And I also see some lighter/darker blotches? Thanks.

I do use cold water after I use warm, to close the pores up. I don't know if it has also happened before I used cold water to seal the pores...

After you wash you face, it is clean. Thus, it looks whiter. (I am assuming you are caucasion.)
As you go through the day, grime and dirt sticks to it, thus, it gets darker.

If you use toner without washing you can get a gray stain on the cotton ball. That is dirt and pollution, but also dead skin cells. That may be what is causing it.

cuz you just got all the dirt off your face , so now your face dont look dirty anymore... duh
