my fiance who is from bombay, now in uk, told me that there is no real word for thank you in hindi because to say it (for example, after being served in a shop) is a bid insult. is that right or am i gullible?!!

yes he is from mumbai/bombay/india and yes he knows english very very well and he talks hindi and bengali and some marathi. maybe he was just winding me up.

No,it is not true.There are so many ways to say thank u in India.Indians simply do not belief in formality.We always have some feelings for everything.Please change your misconception.

I am sorry (also I wont say much for the gentleman coz now he is your fiance), but pls first verify that he is really from Mumbai\Bombay\INDIA, secondly also verify that he knows proper English to know what "thank you" means, and thirdly if answerS to the both above questions are "Yes" then verify that he is mentally sound (I am so sorry for that). Dear, A feeling of gratitude according to me is not limited to a language or country or community, its humane, the feeling is respected all over the world and the same goes for India too. India being a cultured country, people would respect you more for the gratitude you show towards them, a cab driver would feel proud to meet you when u thank him, a porter would see to it that your things are put in place and would be ready to compromise the charge too, a shop owner would look forward to meet you again and serve you, a cop would go out of his way to help you. Humane deeds are invaluable everywhere and so are in India, but I think your fiance is not really from this world (pls dont mind that) just joking...

Dear, it's the opposite, Indian people do thank even in stores, restaurants, to strangers, etc. Maybe your fiance wanted to stress on the fact that in India people speak different dialects and that fact confuses. There are expressions for "Thank you"..(in hindi is "Shukriya".
Have you noticed how profoundly Indian women express their gratitude or showing respect, when they slightly bow very graciously and some even close their palms in front of their chests? That is a sign language, again very popular, traditional in India.

Thankyou is certainly not an insult to be said to some, you did not know well in INDIA. it is a widely understood word. You could use SHUKRIYA or DHANY-VAAD, but that is preferably in the NORTHERN portions of the country. In bombay, THANKYOU works just as it would in the UK or USA

Regrettably you're fiance is wrong.You can thank anyone you've accepted a favour from (even at a shop or restaurant)and the word for it in hindi is 'shukriya' or the more formal 'dhanyavadh'

Hes wrong..Its called dhanyawad in hindi and shukriya in urdu..and we encourage our children to say thank you..though its a different matter that between friends there is no need to say thanks{this is believed by some people}.

Perhaps like in english, it depends on the tone and context in which its said.
In english, you can insult a person by saying "thank you" in a rude tone after they have done something you don't appreciate. Indians likely also have sarcasm? I'd be surprised if they did not.
