Why would a person say they are not ready for a relationship?

For three reasons: 1) They just got out of a bad relationship, 2) They are not that interested/attracted to the person wanting to have a relationship with them, or 3) They just want to do some casual dating until Mr/Mrs Right comes along.

They probally were very hurt by the last one and not ready to get involved that way!
