Yeah consulting a trainer is a good idea. Or, you need to look at it logically, maybe your dog doesn't like being outside on his own? Look at it from an animals perspective - you control the light, you turn it on you turn it off, they have no idea how you do it! But they feel you are in power. So when you turn the light on he probably senses that you guys are around, but when you turn it off he senses that you have left....maybe you can keep him inside? I'm sure he wont cry then. Moreover, you need to do something about this ASAP. Because these type of fears can alter a dogs personality - if they become insecure, they can become bitter and ultimately snap at someone. So, you need to adjust his conditionings so he can be a happy dog.....and if that means seeing a trainer...or letting him sleep inside, be it. You don't want him to suffer in the long run, when you guys suddenly decide to give him away when he eventually snaps!

Hitting the dog wont fix anything, it will just get him to be aggressive... either ignore him and keep the light off, get him a friend to play with while hes outside, or keep the light on.. i think he will grow out of it after he realizes that nothing is going to hurt him at night with or without the light... Remember dogs cant see in the dark any better than you can =) maybe he's nervous not knowing whats out there! =) I hope this helps, just dont be mean to him!! =)

Maybe the poor dog's finally had enough of being an outside dog and wants to be what he was meant to be - a companion! Seriously, how old is this dog? Have you even considered that his eye sight isn't as good as it once was? Has a vet seen him?

Consult a trainer who can evaluate the dog personally. There could be a fear of something in the dark. If that's not a possibility, is it possible to bring your dog in at night?
