Well, just do it.
Leave him the voice message he might miss you or something but doesnt know how to show it.
Fathers are very hard at showing their emotions sometimes.
Sometimes you have to be the one to initiate it.

Buy a nice card, and send it to him, letting him know that you are thinking about him. or on his voice mail, just tell him that I love you, and was just thinking about you, so let me know how you are doing?

Just ask him exactly that, tell him you love him and your worried about him, you want to know if he's alright. Tell him how much you would love to hear from him.
