what is the reason for needing an end cap or trim or laminate flooring. i was going to put carpet up against the laminate and was told it needed an end cap first. why is this?

i know thats not correct because you have to leave 1/4 space between the trim and laminte

I just answered your other question about "end moldings" and then saw this one . The purpose of an end molding is to provide a smooth, rounded surface to finish to. If you were to not use one the sharp edge of the laminate may possibly catch a toe now and then. Also that edge would probably show, unless you have a very deep carpet. It will probably not be perfectly straight and will have some chips. Usually the molding is installed and the carpet is finished using either tack strip or the turn and tack method I described earlier. I have installed a few floors without a molding in emergencies but it usually looks much better if you use them.

you need an end cap because it's a floating floor and the laminate flooring could slide.

The above answer is correct. It also bridges the gap. Gives it a finished look. You need it.
