Sometimes most of us do enjoy a bit of good natured banter. And when I say "most of us", I mean most of ALL of us, not just most of us atheists.

It depends on the person, I think. Some atheists seem to be asking questions because they are actually curious as to how religious people think, some are just having fun at our expense, some are trolls trying to get attention, and some seem to be trying to make us feel stupid.
Many atheists claim to have been raised in a religious household, and some claim to have dropped out of seminary (according to their profile), but I noticed that these same atheists will ask questions about the Bible that surely they already know the answer to if they know so much about the Bible already. I've been able to rebut some people's arguments about alleged "contradictions" in the Bible simply by referring to the footnotes of any cheep Bible. Surely they saw the same footnotes that I saw when they read the Bible themselves to find these difficult passages in the first place (unless they are just cutting & pasting other people's misleading arguments from a webpage).
I assume that many atheists are just trolling for attention. They want to brag about how educated & clever they are (like we care -- we don't know who they are anyway). Many seem to be motivated by insecurity.
And perhaps some just like to argue.

They are just like any other group of people. Some are mature enough to understand that just because a person has different beliefs or opinions that doesn't make them a bad person. On the other hand some are so immature that when someone disagrees with them they pout and whine like a little baby. Trust me , we have the same two groups among Christians.

They do seem to be excessively fond of their own opinions. Most of them think they are very smart because they have unfairly set empirical deduction as the parameters for discussion of spiritual topics. It's hard sometimes to tell which ones are just trolling and which ones really think they have it all sorted out.
Some of them seem especially mean spirited, and say the most hateful things. They don't accept email or messages and won't respond to challenges to their attacks, so it leads me to believe they just want to run in, hurt someone, and then run off. Those who do that remind me of vandals.

In your mind, put a spin on it, maybe they are really looking for something that will convince them. Why would you withhold that from them? Unless you ask questions, you don't find answers! It might not be useful at this moment, but say, 10 years down the line, a situation may come up that they reflect back and think of what you said and maybe they find salvation with Jesus.

i def believe some just want to be antagonistic. you can tell because they seem to get sooo angry and sarcastic.
on the other hand, we christians can come off kinda pompous and i can see why some ppl might react that way.
no one will practically ever come to know Christ through one of these contentious discussions. if we have something to say, we shoulds say something helpful....and out of LOVE.
take care man

There are many who call themselves athiest and few who are. There many more who are agnostics. Why else would they expend so much energy trying to deny something they don't secretly want to believe in?

What we would like is for you to quit trying and leave us alone. Then, there would be a lot less argueing in the world.
