i have dry hair and have heard from a lot of people that you should never use pantene pro-v products because it coats your hair in a layer of wax that makes your hair weak.

i was wondering, are all 'cheaper' shampoos like this (for instance, garnier fructis and herbal essences)..or is it just pantene?

i want to try a new shampoo but want to know which ones to stay away from.

I teach a class where we test shampoos, professional and drug store. surprisingly enough, suave is the least damaging drug store brand. unfortunately it might not be strong enough to do a good deep cleansing. a cost-effect thing to do is to use suave most days and use a good professional clarifying shampoo once a week.

I'd stay away from thermasilk, garnier, and pert

I use Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal and my bottles are almost empty, but after about 3/4 way through the bottle your hair does get build up on it if all you use is Pantene. If you use it, use a clarifying shampoo like Herbal Essences Degunkify Shampoo once in a while to clear it up.
I used Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine, I hated it. It was supposed to make my hair smooth and frizz free, but it just made my hair super frizzy and damaged. I don't know about Herbal Essences, though.
But, yes, usually cheaper priced shampoos and conditioners (except for regular clarifying shampoos and conditioners) leave build up and waxy residues. So alternate using clarifying shampoos and conditioners.

A lot of the "cheaper" shampoos will end up drying your hair. This is even including the "moisture" types. Before you read everything below, don't shampoo everyday. This will dry out your hair and scalp. Shampoo every other day (once a day if you're the two-shower type like me), but use conditioner everyday.

Anyways, see what is mid-priced at a beauty supply store or whatever is on sale. Try scalp-treatment shampoo and conditioner once-a-week as well (i.e. Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree line). Back-to-Basics is a great brand that boasts simple ingredients over a plethora of synthetic boosters. I think b2b products are available in drug stores now. On the upper-scale side, Biosilk seems to be popular with girls I know. My girlfriend uses Infusium that she gets on sale at Target, so far no big complaints.

Whatever you do, I emplore you to stay away from Pantene and Tresemme. Tresemme is so drying, I think it's drying my skin on my body just from rinsing. That can't be good, right?

Vitamin-infused complexes don't have conclusive scientific data to rationalize their inclusion. Topical applications of vitamins will never work, our bodies don't absorb such things at a great rate. It's better to include them as part of your normal diet. Vitamins, antioxidants, etc. do the most if they come from a natural food source instead of supplements, and overconsumption does not really help you either.

To tell you the truth, I was never too happy with Pantene pro-v. It just seemed like a waste of money when everything else worked fine. Buy a specific shampoo for your hair type (aka dry). Also, buy Neutrogina shampoo that strips your hair of the extra weight caused by the build-up of your old shampoo. This will hopefully prevent the weakness you are talking about.

Try one of the shampoos from the collection of John Frieda. For every type of hair there's one and for different colors. There not cheap, about 8 euros, I don't know what they'll cost in the US. But they're very good. I have the shampoo, conditioner and same curl stuff. Works for me and no "wax layers" on your hair as pantene definitely does.

Hope this helps you.

I have three close friends who are hairdressers, and all three have told me the same thing. Pantene DOES coat your hair in waxy buildup. Sometimes, your hair will FEEL healthy, but that doesn't mean it is.

I stick to salon shampoos after knowing that.

you know I bought pantene pro-v and my hair felt so stiff afterwards. I didn't know what was wrong. The dove products I always liked. My daughter is a hairdresser and said they are good.

I have used Pantene shampoo & conditioner all-in-one & have never had hair problems, such as you mentioned. I use many Pantene hair products & told my hair stylist that I use Pantene & she said to continue using them as my hair is in great shape, & I color my hair every eight weeks.
