as most of the other people have stated, get some lessons. This is always a good start, because we cannot rely on what we hear. 'Even closing one ear to hear oneself is not recommendable. You need a pair of "outside" ears, ie a teacher, to give you feedback.
The other reliable source is a recording. Have you heard yourself? The first time is shocking, because the sound we have in our heads and the sound that the real world hears are two different things. A teacher will help you eventually integrate those two sounds.
Practice is indeed important, but it's not so much what but how we practice that makes the difference. 10 minutes of alert concentration beats 20 minutes of mindless la-la-la-ing any day.
Talk to your choir director for further information.
Best wishes and keep on singing

I would recomen dgettin a voice teacher at ur school or talkin to ur choir director on what u can improve on. Also work on all of ur flaws in vocals for a long time so u can improve on ur weaknesses and have none. Also watch other extremely talented singers perform so u can be good on stage to.

Practice, practice, practice. The more you sing, the better you get. You learn to project your voice better and how to use tone and pitch effectively. Pratctice at least a few minutes every day in the beginning, working up to longer time periods. Always warm up your voice. Once in a while, sing for someone who knows what they are talking about and get advice on what you need to work on.

Get private voice lessons. They'll be able to asses your voice and give you specific pointers. They've been trained to do this professionally, so they're probably the best place to go. Most places that offer lessons in instruments will also have vocal coaches, or if don't they may be able to help you find a teacher.

Perhaps a vocal teacher. Or you can do it yourself. If you press on ear closed, you can hear how you sing. It's a great way to tune yourself, especially next to a piano.
