I want to get a fax machine but not really sure how they work.. I tried to do some research but couldn't find out anything.. i don't want to use my computer as one so if i just buy one, & just connect it to my phone line, will it work with the same phone number i have now? I have AT&T in central California. Does anyone know if AT&T will charge you? and how much? And any other things i should know about a fax machine..?

A fax machine works the same as any other telephony device connected to your phone line - the phone company does not care what kind of phone you use - cordless, computer modem, rotary, or fax. If the fax machine is configured to answer, then any calls coming in to your line (number) will be immediately picked up by the fax machine. To deal with this you will either need to know when to expect a fax so you can enable it, or get a second, regular telephone line for your fax machine.
