It happens with Christians and Muslims too.

That's life baby. That's life.
In fact I think I'd be insulted if everyone else was attacked and not atheists. It'd suggest they didn't take our views seriously or something.
So I value the exchange of views and accept that sometimes people may just get a bit carried away. After all, if something's dear to their hearts then why wouldn't they stand their ground? And I've learnt to not worry about the vehemently deranged. I don't suppose they can help it, so why get upset?
So like "thumbs down"s, it's part of Y!A R&S. Yes, you have to sort the gold from the dross. But isn't all of life like that really?

I think the faith of many Christians is founded on shaky ground. They need to attack atheists because they wonder deep down if the atheists are right. As I said in answer to another question here, there can be no proof of God's existence. That is why we call it "faith" and not "reason." The type of Christian who requires reason to believe in what is really a matter of faith, will not be strong enough to stand up to a superior argument of reason. God asks us to believe, even where there's no proof. To say "I believe, because there's proof" is not faith, and that's what I mean by "shaky ground." I believe regardless of whether there's proof, and that's called "faith." Consequently, I don't feel threatened by atheists because I understand their arguments, but I still believe.

Hey! it's the other way around! The atheists come in here and mock and attack us. Just today I have read that we are stupid, need to give our little brains a rest, we are the reason for all wars, and on and on. Get real! Tell the truth!

Attacks are bad.
Questioning how we think is fine. However, almost all of what is supposed to look like questioning is really thinly disguised ignorant attack. It is only the most impressive of the Christians who manages to ask courteously about how we atheists think. It does happen, but they're the clear minority.

Many evangelical Christians are taught to convert everyone, and anyone that doesn't is doomed. I believe anyone that lives a good life and just doesn't believe God exists are given a chance to admit that God does exist before they are condemned. Think of it this way, if we are indeed worm food, and our beliefs are wrong, we have lost nothing. But if we're right, we've done what we're supposed to. Just show love to all, and let your life be the shining light, let God do the work.

Y! R&S has 2 jobs:
1) to help people find the answers to their burning questions
2) to allow us to blow off some steam when angry.
realize, everybody tends to do the second. and it might be that this is Religion and Spirituality, and most atheists tend to
a) religion bash
b) not believe in either
so most people tend to think they don't belong. but I don't mind too much if they're here, cuz the more things they throw at me, the more my faith strengthens!
