What does he mean?
This guy was a senior of mine and has recently been appointed as a Reader in my college, so he is sort of my teacher

Well, if he has a position of authority with you and you really care about him, you don't want to know what he really meant because you wouldn't want to jeopardize him or your grade in that way. I'd take it as a compliment, and sometime down the road if neither of you are in a relationship and you are both equals, then I'd look him up if I really liked him.

No matter what a man say's to a woman he means "what do I got to convince you to sleep with me". Trust me, the blogbaba was once unmarried and still remembers what men are interested in, we all want the same thing. Men are simple creatures, food, shelter, sex and maybe a hobbby. Did I mention sex, yeah we spend most of our time thinking about it, and trying to convince, con, beg or simply lie our way into a Woman's pants. We can't help ourselves, we are programed that way. The hobby is optional.
He means "if you will, I will".

He may be saying that he really likes you, but that there's probably not a chance, maybe because his like a "teacher" for you.

inappropriate is what it means. you are in college though so old enough to get what it means. You only question it b/c you doubt your own instincts. They are right on though.
