My dog goes to the bathroom, then he has to sniff around our WHOLE yard! The problem is, he comes when I'm close to him, but when I'm in the house and call him he won't come! I can't use treats because he won't come when I don't have them. Any other suggestions?

OH please, most guys don't do that either and it's not even healthy for the poor animal. Let them relax, walk around, sniff around, go poo and then walk some more, go pee, walk some more...take some time for heaven sake...you took the responsibility of having the animal! Gee, I hope you never have a kid. They cry, they do things when they want, they cry more, they want their way, you have to constantly discipline them. You would end up just dumping the poor thing on your mom. please check in with reality.

You can use treats - sounds like that'd be the best thing, since they're most effective. What you need to do to get your dog to come when you don't have them is to practice his recall in a place that isn't as exciting for him as your yard. Pick a less distracting place and reward him for coming to you - make it a game, don't stant still and yell at him to come. Have him chase you down for a toy and game of tug, have him chase you for a treat which you give to him by tossing up for him to catch, etc. Have a friend help you and practice restrained recalls.

The key is to build a long history of your dog coming to you and being rewarded (with things that he loves!) before you call him away from something that he really wants to check out.
Make this game easy at first for your dog. Then, make it a little harder - play hide and seek, use your creativity to make it fun. This way, you won't have to use treats all the time.

He's not finished yet. Dogs need to walk around and sniff for about 10 minutes, they don't always do all of their business in one spot. Give your dog the time it needs to finish.

hehehe! Dogs are driven by their noses! Yes he does is business bt then there are all those interesting smells to distract him. He does not get that stimulation in the house.

Reward is still the answer. Treats are not the only way of rewarding your dog for comming when you call him. Lots of petting and praise is just as important IF you are the one he looks up to as the "alph of the pack".

Go outside with him. Practice calling him to you, giving him the treat, then letting him go and run around some more. If every time you call him you put him inside and the fun stops, he won't come. But if sometimes he gets a cookie or a scritch, or a game of tug, then gets to go back outside he'll learn to come.

I take my dog out to "potty" with a leash. Sure I have to walk all over my yard with him (sometimes at odd hours) for a few until he finds a spot, but I can bring him back in with no probs.

Good heavens, he's just being a dog. He needs to get out. Would probably do you some good also ;) Sounds like you maybe shouldn't be a dog owner.

ok, get some friends togeather with holoween costumes and scary stuff like that. Run realy fast at the dog screaming and yelling, preferably at night in a dark ally. He will be so scared, he wont be able to help but "do his business".

Our dauschund did the same thing, sniffing the yard all over. Your dog is looking for another dogs scent peoably and this is normal. Call the dogs name and if he coms lavish him with praise. If you have to call him 3-4 times then don't praise him just ignore him. Don't beat him though!
