well anway, many had suggested taking that metro. Isn't that a subway? Doesn't that run underground? Is that safe? I've never been on one? And would that stop at the national zoo? We are planning a vacation there this summer.

The government had my husband working in DC about a year ago. The Metro/subway is a terrific way to get around the area. It is very clean, inexpensive, goes everywhere, etc... My 5/6 yr. old son loved it. He was much better at figuring out the map than I was. (Parking is outlandish at the National Zoo, take public transportation there. I found that out the hard way.)

Just try to avoid at the going to/from work rush. It is just harder to get a seat then, especially if traveling with children. Also, try to get the free tickets for the Washington Monument, it is unbelievable to go up inside all the way to the top.

Also, a tip, when visiting about any of the national buildings/monuments they will wand you (Now that the terrorism scare is heightened). It's a good idea to leave any jewelry at the hotel. Just to avoid the hassle of removing everything.

Yes, the metro is a subway. In the city itself, it is almost entirely underground. As it goes out the suburbs, it is mostly above ground. It is extremely safe - you will see metro police, and there are plain clothes officers onboard as well. I feel totally safe traveling on it by myself.

There is a metro stop for the National Zoo. It's a few blocks away, but not a bad walk at all. (and you walk right by a Starbucks, which always makes me happy). The National Zoo is a lot of fun. Just keep in mind that DC is very hot and humid in the summer. Be sure to drink lots of water, and plan some time visiting indoors attractions!! :)

The metro is sort of a subway. It runs above and below ground and it is VERY safe. I ride it every day. There is a stop at the national zoo. There is a website that you can go on that will give you directions via metro system anywhere in the metro DC area. http://www.wmata.com/

Traffic and parking are hellish here so I strongly recommend the metro. There is even a stop at National Airport (Reagan).

Yes, the Washington DC metro is a subway. It is very safe. Yes, it does have stops near the zoo. If you are planning a trip to Washington DC, it is also a very economical way to travel. You can get week passes that allow unlimited rides on the Metro. It is much cheaper that taking cabs or looking/paying for parking if you drive yourself.

The hardest part for first timers is learning those darn ticket machines. We had to ask for help at one of the manned kiosks the first time. The gentleman actually came out and showed us how to work it. So beyond all of the above, they are helpful too.
