why does my dog eat poo? (serious)?

Question

we have a german shephard 2yrs old. he has a habit of eating his own poo. we'd love to know why. we've tried him on different foods
ranging from cheap to rather expensive. he has plenty of food and water available.

No one really knows for sure why they do it. Simple answer Because they can.

To stop it your best bet is just to keep it cleaned up that way he can't eat it.

Some people will say sprinkle stuff on the poo to make it taste bad. I figure if I'm going to be out sprinkling stuff on poo, I may as well be cleaning it up.

As far as food additives that are supposed to make them stop. Some dogs like the taste of them, and they usually have to be used forever. Once you stop putting the stuff in their food, they'll know and go right back to it. I personally don't like to put unnecessary chemicals into my dogs.

I used to have a dog that did this....I asked the vet about how to stop it and he said to sprinkle Adolph's Meat Tenderizer on her food before she ate it and she won't like the way it smells when she poos, and will stop eating the poo. Within a week she had stopped eating poo and never ate it again after that. I never noticed a difference in smell but obviously she did.

My puppy still does that and she is only 7 months and 1 week its because 1.you have to clean their poo daily every hour 2.Not Enough food for them you should get to the doctors(pet)

maybe it is missing something from its diet try giving it human food.
I have two dogs and neither one eats poop and we give some of our food to them every time we eat. My vet said our dog was very healthy and to keep it on the diet it was on. Try it, it cant hurt.
We also feed them dog food but not too much of both or it will get fat and have health problems.

he's a dog, it's what dogs do! don't be worried, the only thing you can really do to stop it is watch him while he does his duty, and if he goes to eat it, pull him away by his collar and sternly say NO, if that doesn't work or he is reluctant to stop eating it, before you go to take him outside, ut a leash on him so you have full control of him.

its got a funny name as is a common habit in dogs my yorkie does it it begins with a c its nothing to worry bout so iv been told ..to stop him you can sprinkle pepper or curry powder over his droppings

bad habit resulting from boredom possible.... try TIMBERWOLF or CANIDAE dog food dry kibble only 2/x and make sure you scoop his poop daily

or to get attention.
it also could be lack of a balanced diet.
