Because the voice that talked to her wasn't God. God does not exist. And the people that burned her were ignorant bible fanatics that killed anyone that they thought was a blasphemer. She was a schizophrenic girl that was persecuted by religious people for her mental illness. Religion sucks.

If Joan were alive today, she would be diagnosed with a mental health issue, probably schizophrenia with onset of delusional personality disorder. The only reason we even know about her, is the strangeness of her story. It is reported that Joan wholly believed that God was talking to her, egging her on to usurp the Throne of France. I believe that somebody latched onto her and used her for their own ends. It is likely that they heard her rantings, and wishing to dethrone the powers that be, took up her cause and then hung her out to dry when it all went south. Back when, the only way to gain power was to enact religious fervour, and in some cases this worked, and in others it utterly failed. Joan's case was a failure of epic proportions. It is also likely, that the Authorities of the time enjoyed burning people alive, especially uppity women, and what better excuse to burn one, than by saying that she thinks that God would talk to her...a woman...as if...so let's burn her so no other women get ideas above their station. It was a violent time to be alive, even without the added burden of a mental illness.

My question is why people use persistent suffering as an argument for the nonexistence of God. Everyone has a sticking point for what THEY wish God would do if he truly exists. For a great many people, suffering is that point. I don't necessarily think that if there is a God, he would operate according to man's desires. But many people have these hangups that require certain actions on the part of a deity for them to accept that deity's existence or viability. I don't buy into that. Suffering is inevitable in a universe where free will exists. Jeanne d'Arc did something dangerous and she suffered and died for it. I don't think it speaks for or against God either way.

Interesting to see these answers and how quick the "God does not exist" popped up. God did not allow Joan of Arc to burn alive that is man's doing. We all have free will and Those who belive in God, know he does not interfere, in man's decisions. We come to this planet to learn. Those who belive God Does not exist, that is their Free Will at work. They are entitled to believe that the same as those who belive there is a God. Bad Things happen here and always will as that is the planet we chose to come to ...There is no other hell we already live in it but we can choose to make it heaven or hell. Joan was probably given a chance to recant but her free will said I will die for what I believe.

Because God doesn't exist.
If He did, allowing Joan of Arc to burn would be pretty minor compared to all the wars, famine, suffering and disease that have gone on and the MILLIONS of innocent people - including newborn and even unborn children who have died as a result.
What would you think of a person who had the power to stop the death of even one child but decided not to? Well God could put a stop to the deaths of all children but He chooses not to - conclusion: either God does not exist or He's a sadist.

I asked my dad this question and he replied "she was tied and burned to the stake right? well if she hadn't been burned at the stake, she would not be remebered. maybe god allowed this tragedy to happen so people will realize that SHE DIED FOR HER FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST! maybe god wants us to remeber her so others will believe in him live she did!" REMEMBER: GOD LOVES EVERYONE, AND EVERYTHING HE DID OR DOES IF FOR A REASON!

God gave us all free will, and such things should serve as a warning to show evil people something as close as it gets here to how bad hell will be so they straighten up. If she made it to heaven that burning will have been worth it. If she went to hell that was just a warm up.
