How to handle boy trouble??

Im a junior in high school and this boy i like is a freshman. We have only seen each other a few times. But we are both in the same club. Should i just go up to him and flirt and get to know him? He isn't immature like most freshman but i think since i am older i should be the 'aggressive' one. Like i should ask him out and stuff. But how long should i wait to ask him out? I don't want him to cross the 'friend zone' but i also don't want to come on to him too quickly. What should I do? Also I am not a very shy person but I know that timing is everything so any suggestions??
