the most popular theory is during the severe winter of 1962/63, the weather was so bad that between december and march they only managed to play three times.One of these was a Scottish cup tie between themselves and Albion Rovers to be played at home.In a desperate attempt to get Tannadice playable they hired a burner to melt all the snow then covered the pitch with sand, so as not a single blade of grass was visible, so that the game could be played-they actually won 3-0. But it's because of the sand that they became known as the Arabs.
