A boy went to a master to learn karate. how long will it take me to learn. the master said 10 years. the boy said, what if i practice twice as much. the master said, 15 years. the boy said, what if i practice night and day with all my effort. the master said, 20 years. the boy said, why is it that when i tell you i will work harder, the longer it will take. the master said, the answer is simple. when you have one eye on the destination, you only have one eye left to find the way there.

While you should never look at it from the point of "how long", it really depends on who you train under and how gifted you are at picking up techniques and applying them.

And just to add... 99% of all techniques you will ever use in a real fight you'll learn by the time you get your blue belt. Yes there are other techniques you'll learn, but after getting your blue belt it's more about chaining submissions together and perfecting what you know than learning new moves.

**If you train under Rorian Gracie expect a very, very long wait.

figure about ten years. I wouldn't worry too much on how long until you get your black belt, a belt is just a belt. youre as good as you are, and you should know how good you are. you're always going to be improving and not having a certain belt shouldn't hold you back. Keep training and train hard and have fun doing it.
