I have Tourette's Syndrome, & every time I have a tic or an outburst, people say that's inappropriate or unacceptable. & when I tell them what I have & tell them I can't control it, they tell me that I'm making up excuses, & they STILL punish me. I shouldn't have to suffer consequences for what I can't control. Like for example, why punish me for uncontrollably blinking my eyes?

Stigma & discrimination is a terrible thing, you can explain & give reading material to those close to you but the general public are hard & many will be judgemental til awareness of TS is raised through education. Bottom line is it is a medical condition & deserves the respect just like epilepsy or diabetes, you are not to blame, remember that good luck sweetie.

I'm currently doing a project in school on a situation similar to yours: "The effects of HIV/AIDS on the social life of a person that is infected with the virus". Its primary focus is on the acceptance and treatment of these individuals by society once their diagnosis is made public.
.. so I can see where you're coming from. I think I would have reacted the same as you described, if I had not seen a show about it on MTV. They aren't taking you seriously because they don't know that Tourette's Syndrome is an actual disorder.
Take care.

Tourettes syndrome seems fake when u see it the first time. and even if u explain it to sumone ...they wont understand it because it has been diagnosed recently and its uncomprehendable that certain movements happen and the person cant control them. when i first heard of it ...i thought the same ...that the person is making up excusez. u should try to explain the disorder in words they will understand.
people punish u ? what kind of people? like teachers of ur class?
most of them are unaware of what the illness is. have ur psychiatrist write u a note and show it to them next time they punish u.

Do they do this at school or on your job? You should report whoever is giving you problems to someone with a higher status. If you are a child, tell your parents and they can expain the problem that you have. You know what really pisses me off, when someone have a special problem or handicap, and the people around them treats them like crap. Don't let this get you down, because you are a person just like everyone else. And don't think all people see you as having a problem, I respect you no matter what. Good luck.

If this is taking place at school, ask the administrators if they would consider an "in service" lecture. This is where someone from the TSA would come to your school and educate those around you about Tourettes. This would take away the stigma and mystery. Hope this helps.
Find info here about "in service" programs for educators.

What people are you talking about? Hopefully it isn't anyone in your family. Your family should know and understand this disease of yours. If you are talking about other authority figures in your life, then your parents should speak to them and explain your illness.
No one has the right to ask you to stop blinking your eyes. You cannot help it and it is not hurting others.

Sadly today..some people are very cruel and they would rather make fun of you instead of taking the time to find out what it is!It must be a great struggle for you. Take a deep breath when you hear it and don`t reply back..this will let those people know that it`s not bothering you..if it`s not bothering you..IT`S NO FUN FOR THEM ANYMORE! I wish you well.

some people just dont understand what it is to have a disorder like that, so they dont understand. Both my husband and I have a disorder and sometimes my husband gets judged for things he cant help. I know its hard sometimes. Try to find a postive way of thinking about the whole thing. and I will keep you in my prayers:)

people are just stupid like that and dont understand. Next time they do that give them a name to a website that explains the syndrome. Hopefully its not your parents that are doing that!

First, don't be ashamed of it because it is something you can control.
The people saying that are very immature and not very smart.
