Take him on walks at least twice a day. It varies with the dog. Exercises should steadily increase until he is an adult. I get him tired exercising in the mornings before you run errands or go to work, then before dark once you get home to tire him out before bed. Be sure he doesnt get fat because it can take years off his life. I'm glad that you are concerned about his weight. If he does start to gain weight although he is excercising, just cut back on food a little. It means that he doesn't need the extra nutrients.

It depends on how much the dog weighs and how tall it is. I would suggest to get it on it's leash and let it run with you. If not, play with him/her. Throwing ball is exercise and fun for the dog.

btw, Golden Retrievers are sooo cute as pups. =]

Why are you worried about your puppy getting fat!!!
Goldens have a very high energy level and unless you dog is sick then he could probably out excersise you.
Taking an hour walk in the morning and in the evening is very good excerise for him. But he will need one on one playtime with you too.

Young dogs can free play as much as they can handle. Forced exercise-leash walking-should be kept limited until pups reach full physical maturity -@18 months old. With free play, dogs take mini breaks and give their joints rest. With forced leash walking it's up to you to make sure the dog gets ample break time.

Dog parks are great fun, and so are agility and flyball classes. Remember that mental stimulation counts, too - exercising mind and body is a great combination!
