The thermostat is stuck closed, or may only be opening part way.

After telling us that you "keep it running by stepping on the gas" I'd say your engine is a stone's throw from death so it might not matter what is causing your overheating problem as you will be getting a new engine anyway. Sorry.

But in any case it could be any of the conditions these fine answerers have posted but you still need to get it to a mechanic.

As one of the others mentioned ... if your car overheats you STOP!, FIX IT RIGHT AWAY, OR GET TOWED .... you don't step on the gas. Running your car in an overheated condition will cause the pistons and possibly some other components to melt together into one solid piece of crap that used to be your engine!

Please don't hesitate to fix this problem right away for your sake!

Have you checked your thermostat? It may be bad. If it's not regulating correctly and kicking on your radiator fan to cool it, it will keep overheating. Does it have a carb or is it fuel injected?

Don't drive your car if it's overheating!!!!!

Check you coolant levels, check to make sure you don't have a clog in the radiator or colling system check your thermostat.

Get a complete coolant system flush. You could do irrepairable damage to the block if you keep driving like that!!
