Every state has a web page to go. Search for the state you are looking for like: Alabama Department of Corrections. Everystate has a page for DOC. Many will have a place to search for a inmate and shows different facilities. Their records will show the location of a inmate from the week before. Depending on how often they update their site. Release dates and transfer dates are never put on websites. For security reasons they don't give any information about any transfers to another facilty or a transfer to court or a hospital. Even family are not notifed of transfers to a hospital. Looking for DOC pages for the page you are looking for is a good start.

When I just Goggled "nmate detention information" I found all kinds of sites for the U.S., but these were for counties. You might want to specify a particular jurisdiction — Federal, State, county, etc. — and search with this phrase, but also "jail" or "penitentiary", depending on what you're looking for.
BTW: anyone know how to find out when somebody who has lost their final extradition appeal from Canada ends up in U.S. custody? The alleged crime took place in Florida and is in Federal jurisdiction.

Your state's website may have the information. Here in NC it is publicly available. You even get to know how long it is before someone on Death Row has to serve before being considered for parole on the lesser offenses
