Have fun shopping. At 3 they normally are pretty clear about what they would like and wouldn't like to play with. I teach 4 year olds and have a 4 year old son of my own so I am preschool toys are my life right now. :)

You should get something that is interactive and educational too. It is nice to have trucks and cars, but that shouldn't be the only thing he plays with.
Try an electronic computer game that will help him with his ABCs and numbers since he starts pre-school soon.
Some water toys for the summer would also be fun since that too is just around the corner.

I have two 3yo grandsons. One has so many toys that he's not interested in any one of them. The other has a lot less toys & enjoys his Hotwheels cars & a small battery powered train & track. He has a piece of carpet with roads & building etc that he drives his cars on. Plus a small garage.

My boys at that age loved matchbox cars, Thomas the Tank Train, or what about Disney Cars. Disney Cars is a great seller right now for preschool boys! You could get him some new disney movies, bicycle with training wheels, or maybe a leapster.

My son loves his play food. He has a set of wodden foods that are attached together with velcro and he can "cut" them with a wooden knife. He also really likes puzzles.

Plastic bugs/animals/dinosaurs. (mix with blocks/duplo)
Duplo/Lego/wooden blocks. (mix with plastic animals/bugs/dinosaurs/people)
Dress ups and pretend food etc. (old telephones, keyboards, head sets)
Sandpit with buckets/spades/cooking equipment.
Big cardboard boxes. can paint to create cars, aeroplanes, truck, spaceship etc.
Chalk, to draw on concrete.
