They are killing whales; highly intelligent animals on the brink of extinction. There are many products made from whale oil:
lamp oil (from sperm oil)
margarine and cooking oil (from whale oil)
candles, soaps, cosmetics and perfumes (from sperm oil)
corsets and umbrellas (from whalebone)
whale-meat for human consumption
animal feed (from meat meal)
fertilizer (from bone meal)
string for tennis racquets (from tendons)

However, all of the above items can be made from alternative ingredients. We no longer need to harvest whales for their oil...we have petroleum products and vegetable oil that works just as well.

Japan MUST NOT stop scientific research whaling for the preservation of environmental balance of marine resources.

Most of the anti-whaling fanatics know nothing about biological data of whales and the importance of scientific research.

If you are not familiar with them, how can you preserve them?
I hope your question is posted from this angle.

There's nothing wrong with whaling if it's done responsibly. As with fishing or hunting you don't want to harvest more than the resource can sustain.

I thought you liberals respected other peoples cultures. I don't think it is any concern of yours what Japan does. Try minding your own business for a change
