You are allowed to take $10,000 with you on a trip. If you bring more, they confiscate it. Do the scanners and X-Ray machines reveal the dollars, and if so, how?

No they do not detect currency. However if you're carrying a large amount you may be asked questions about it. And those questiona are perfectly legal. If you are carrying a certain amount and you cannot prove why, then they may be able to seize that money until you can prove where it came from.

They detect the metal strip in the bill, I don't remember how many thousands it takes to set it off though

You can travel with as much money as you please. You just have to declare it. An no, metal detectors are not set to be sensitive enough to detect the foil identity strip in money. But theoretically they could be, but eveything metal would set them off. Like zippers, buttons etc..
