If he is travelling on a UK or other EU passport, you will be OK.
If you are travelling from the US or anywhere outside the EU, you will have to get a new passport as you must have 6 months validity left on your passport at the time of arrival.

If there is any question of the passport it is best to get it sorted out right now. I have just renewed my passport and it is much simpler than the first time that you have a passport as there is no need for a countersignature etc. At the moment it is not very busy so it took around a week from sending the application to receiving my new passport. At busier periods it can take at least 3 weeks.

Yes, you're fine. Ignore any of that nonsense about having to have 3 or 6 months' validity left on your passport - for EU citizens travelling within the EU all that matters is that your passport is valid at the time that you're travelling.

Assuming he is British, he just needs a valid unexpired passport when entering another EU country.
When he returns, it's best to get him a new passport. The passport will add teh unexpired time onto the new one.

No! All passports must be valid from six months from after the date of departure. You will need to get a new one for him. You may get through but I would not take the chance.

I should think so! After all you can go to Spain with a Travel Document from the Post Office for gods sake! However, don't take my word for it.
