Well your going tha right way about it already, Clayshooting is a great way of a novice standing a chance of been grantted a shotgun certificate.
Which ever club your going to i would advise you to take out a membership with them and become a member.
You dont need a licence to shoot on the ground as long as your supervised and moust clubs have there own guns, what more is you will pick up the nesasary experience over time to become knowledgable and know how to treat and respect the tool in your hands.
Iv never been to a clay club that was not freindley to berginers and whats more give them all the advice they requier,,,, just dont be scared to ask,,, after all we are ambasetors to our sport.
When the time comes for you to apply for you certificate, contact your local constabulary and they will send out the forms ( grant or renewal of a shotgun certificate) take your time in filling it in if you get stuck take it with you to the clay club someone will give you a hand, and whats more been a member of the club will give you the best chance of been granted yous certificate,
When it comes to the counter signiture it should be some one not related, who owns a busines or a civil cervant, follow the instructions with you passport photos ect.
As long as you have no crimanal convictions, police record etc your on a winner.
Ounce your aplication is sent off get your self a police approved gun cabbenet and instale it with raw plugs to a maine wall out of sight of visiters etc, at some stage your local firearms officer will call upon you to inspect it, ,make sure ounce you have instaled it there is no movment and it can not be pulled away from the wall, chancers are the visiting officer will try.
When it comes to shooting at the club just ask questions, you will be advised on your first gun, cartridges and a whole lot more. Also i would advise you to become a member of the CPSA ask at the club
I wish you all the best and good luck,,
Happy clay shooting

If you don't have a criminal record, are of good character, can give references and be a member of a gun club there shouldn't be a problem. The police want to see there is a reason why you want a shotgun, hence the club membership. They wont give one one otherwise, unless of course your a farmer and need once for pest controll. You will also need to show you have a lockable gun cabinet. I am assuming you are British.
