Does a person on life support realize who is there?

Question

I didn't get to say all I wanted to, after not seeing or speaking to my dad for 10 years. But was there when he passed. Did he know I was there?

Sweety...my son was in an induced coma on life support for six weeks several years ago (he had a form of legionella). He was in his early twenties at the time though that does not matter I suppose. We did not know if he would make it from day to day as the infection turned septic and moved around to different organs and body systems. It eventually settled in the lining around his heart and was able to be drained away and treated and he is okay now.

I am giving you more background than I usually would because I feel you need a complete answer.

In talking to him since...there were times when he was semi-aware of others being there. He describes it as more of a hearing based sense...he heard familiar voices that brought him comfort and at times he was aware of a hug or someone holding his hand.

At other times (and this may be due to pain killers and the medicine to induce the coma), he felt very sureal...as if he were watching all of us but really was not a part of the drama. He does not feel he had anything that could be described as an after death experience and in reality there was no time when he actually died medically.

He also somehow made sense of what was happening to him by creating a "story" either from fears or just his mind trying to make logic of it...that he had been in a car accident and his two children were killed and that was why he was there (none of that was true at all, but he believed it so fully that when he was finally able to come out of the coma, he was sobbing and we had to bring the kids in so he could feel sure they were okay).

I think there is a good chance of it. Even when someone seems to be unconscious, they may be hearing you or aware of your presence on some level, much as a person in a deep sleep will still sometimes hear what is going on around them. I think it is wonderful that you were able to be there with him, and I think that he was blessed to have you there. No one should die alone. God be with you.
