I've tried the frebreeze and it only added to this noxious odor. I've put out used coffee grounds and I've used oxy clean in a bath for her but I still smell it on her and through out the house. Any ideas would be welcomed.

Forget about the tomato juice, it doesn't work. This stuff really does.

Skunk Smell Remedy

Karyl Brandon, animal science technician at K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine, has tried several experiments to remove the skunk smell from sprayed animals. As a grooming expert, she says many of the common antidotes that people try, but fail to do the job, are tomato juice, vinegar and different types of shampoos.

Brandon recommends an easy home recipe using ingredients that can be found in most drugstores.

* One quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
* One-fourth cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)

* One teaspoon liquid soap

She says to begin by wetting the animal down, then apply the mixture and work it through the animal's hair. Leave the solution on three to four minutes, and finish with a tap water rinse.

Caution: Make up only as much of the de-skunking remedy as you can use at one time. It is unsafe to bottle and store this chemical combination.

Give your dog a regular bath first to get all of the prior stuff you've tried out of his/her fur first. No sense damaging the fur if you don't need to.

Then, if you want a second opinion, call a vet before trying what I am about to suggest as they may have found something new and better. But....

What you want to do is bathe your dog in lukewarm water with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. You were on the right track with the Oxi Clean, which has a peroxide bleach in it, but the thing with skunk spray is that it not only has volatile orgainc sulfur compounds (the source of the stink) but also a few chemicals that react to oils present in skin and fur and *stick to them*. So yeah, you need to use the peroxide/oxygen bleach to weaken the scent over the next 2-3 baths, *and* you need something to make the scent less reactive, like the baking soda, so you can remove the stuff physically from the fur too. And it will take multiple attempts.

Of course it goes without saying that if you have a long-haired breed, you might want to give your dog a haircut too and trim off the bulk of the fur as well. It's a pain to do but if you physically remove the excess fur you do remove some of the scent. Just be careful to trim, not shave--leave a little left so the dog can stay warm while it grows back.

I have also heard from some in my family that Epsom Salts can over 2-3 baths remove the chemical behind the scent though they do nothing directly to the smell....it might be an alternative if your dog's skin is already too irritated to handle the baking soda/peroxide combo, which is really reactive when mixed together.

I hope this helps....remember, whatever you do, there is no one-shot way to remove skunk scent, it will only come off after at least 2-3 baths.

there are several things you can do. first there is a commercial product called Skunk Off that you can buy at the local Pet Store. just follow directions of the bottle. Number one problems is most people want to bath the animal, which is in my opinion wrong. the oxy-clean really isn't meant to deodorize. try a bath of either 50-50 water and Shout spot remover. or soak the animal in Whole Milk and don't rinse it off. skunk spray is protein based and the lactose in whole milk absorbs the protein. same thing with the Shout spot remover. Last resort, shave the animal as the spray is impeded in the hair follicles. Tomato juice will just make for a huge sticky mess and you will end of shaving the animal in the end. Good Luck

Yes, I hear tomato juice helps get the smell out. Bathe it in a bathtub or something a few times. It might be a while though until all of the smell is gone. XD I imagine it smells horrible though, so I hope it works for ya

I was a dog groomer for 18 years and the only thing that helped(you can only reduce the smell, time is needed for the rest) is tomato juice bath.Yes tomato juice! Wet your dog in the tub and cover in tomato juice. Leave this on as long as you can tolerate sitting tubside by her. Usually the spray is concentrated on the dogs face and chest so put tomato juice there first. Also,if your dogs hair is long, you can clip it short to help.

I have heard the best way to remove skunk pee from an animal is to wash them in tomato sauce! For the house, good luck! I shake arm and hammer for pets on the floors and couch before I vaccum. However the scent lasts only a short while.

Bath him with tomato juice. You can also get special anti-skunk shampoo at some pet stores - but tomato juice works just as well.

For the dog everyone tells me over and over the tomato sauce thing - I know it's a mess but everyone says it works - for the house - I had the same problem you can scrub and scrub with everything you've got = aint nothing but time for it to wear away will work.

I know it sucks!
